How Can I Avoid the AMT tax?

Does this mean that I should file my tax return using the standard deduction and avoid itemizing?

I really don't want to pay any AMT tax in 2007!

Thanks...

How Can I Avoid the AMT tax?

Not at all, one should itemize where possible due to the fact every taxpayer would generally be allowed an exemption allowance. These exemptions were $66,250 for 2007 joint filers, $44,350 for single filier, and $33,125 for those married filing separately.

However, this exemption is reduced by 25 cents for each dollar of AMT taxable income above $150,000 for joint filers $112,500 for single filiers and $75,000 for married filing separately. To compound the problem, Congress has not adjusted the exemptions for inflation, which is one reason why more people owe the AMT every year.

Thus, despite the fact that the itemizing on your tax return may result in AMT tax, most taxpayers would still benefit by itemizing, due to certain exemptions being allowed prior to the imposition of the AMT tax.

You would generally not escape the imposition of AMT if your AGI is exceeds $150,000 for married filing joint taxpayer, $112,500 for single filiers and $75,000 for married filing separate status.
