What is the definition of Garnishment of Wages?

The definition of "Garnished wages" is monies that are generally withheld from payroll checks to pay a debt. People would generally be subject to garnished wages as a result of

1. failure to pay back taxes.

2. failure to pay child support.

3. failure to pay creditors. The

4. failure to pay monies in any type of court settlement.

Generally speaking a court must order "those paying the person who is in debt to reduce the wages. The employer must then send the garnished amount to the appropriate source."

In addition, it is worth noting that the government can also demand garnishment of wages, as well as reducing the tax refund of income tax returns when a borrower defaults on a student loan.
