What happens if you have a capital loss in excess of $3,000?

What happens if you have a capital loss in excess of $3,000 and do not have any offsetting capital gains?

What happens to the excess capital losses? Can I write these off in future years and for how many years can I take these losses at $3,000 per year?

Thanks!
