I think most tax software programs provide an adequate method of accurately preparing a simple or basis 1040 tax return. The problem is when the individual tax returns gets a little complicated and items of income or expenditure require some technical understanding.

In this instance, the tax return should be reviewed by a CPA prior to you mailing the tax return. Nevertheless, if you are inclined to accomplish this goal yourself, then I would recommend the any of the several tax software that are advertised on this site.

Remember most software made for the retail taxpayers will address most of the common tax problems, but some software will not perform certain complex tax complications involving AMT, Net operating losses carryover, Passive losses, K-1 Items, Foreign tax credit, etc.. So, please be careful and definitely consult a CPA before mailing the tax return.
