Tax Dispute results in payment abatement but not interest

Hi,

I had to file a dispute on my tax return as the department of revenue (DOR) was claiming an inaccuracy on the health coverage (mandatory in Massachusetts, where I filed the taxes that year).

A month after submitting the dispute with all the necessary documents to prove that I was not at fault, I was contacted by the office of appeals. The person who contacted me said that he would abate the payment that the DOR was claiming but NOT the interest. This interest occurs because of the time that has passed since I was due the payment.

I cannot wrap my head around that fact that I would have to pay interest over a payment that I do not owe. So the person informed that if I don't want to pay the interest I must go for a hearing. And added that the result of the hearing would be the same, that I would have to pay the interest anyways.

Does anyone have any advice to give in this situation?
Is it true that the interest will not be abated or was this just a tactic to make me pay the interest?

I would very much appreciate your comments.
Thanks

If you disagree with a DOR decision about your liability for the interest , you can usually appeal that decision to the  DOR
